In Beantwortung Ihres freundlichen Schreibens vom 30. Nov., hochgeehrter Herr Doctor,
erkläre ich mich bereit, £38 für die erste Decade der Monographie der
zu zahlen, aber da die Mittel meines Departements mir von Jahr zu Jahr vom Parlament
bewilligt oder bestätigt werden, könnte ich mich zu Zeit immer nur dann für die Fortsetzung
dieser Ihrer wichtigen Monographie verpflichten, wenn ein neuen Finanz-Jahre welches
1 Juli beginnt, auch in späterer Zeit die Geldmittel hinlänglich geblieben sind.

Dann ist noch eine andere Schwierigkeit zu überwinden. Nach den Departements Regulationen
kann ich nur £10 u. darunter eigenmächtig in Rechnungen direct von meiner Anstalt
an die Staats Casse für Bezahlung überweisen. Wenn ich also die ganzen von Ihnen geforderten
£38 in einer Summe zur Rechnung brächte, so würde ich erst specielle Erlaubniss des
Minister Chefs nachsuchen müssen und vielleicht andere Schwierigkeiten haben. Diese
könnten umgangen werden, wenn Sie mir je eine Platte oder zwei in der hundertfachen
Auflage zusenden, wenn immer fertig, mit einer folgendermassen lautenden Quitung:

Eine solche Quitung könnte ich dann sofort nach Ankunft an die Staats-Treasury hier
senden, von welcher dann die Summe bald zu erheben wäre, um solche durch Postorder
für Sie in Lund zahlbar zu machen. Am Besten wäre es wohl, wenn die Lithographien
nur eine Art zur Zeit kämen, denn dann würde das Päckchen nicht zu gross werden und
wohl durch die Packetpost (wenn auch in 2 Theilen) befördert sein von dort und die
entsprechenden Seiten von Beschreibungen könnten ja auch für sich mit der Post kommen.
Auf diese Weise wären Zahlung und Übersendung vereinfacht. Das Binden in Decaden könnte,
wenn immer 10 Arten behandelt sind, hier geschehen.
Hierbei sende ich Ihnen 2 eben von Arnhem's Land angekommene Characeen.
Es bleibt Ihnen selbst überlassen, wie viel Exempl. Sie zum Verkauf dort herstellen
lassen wollen, u. zu welchem Preise als eine ja nur Sie soweit betreffende Sache.

In answer to your friendly letter of 30 November,
highly esteemed Doctor, I declare myself prepared to pay £38 for the
first
decade of the monograph of
, but since the funds of my department are granted or confirmed to me from year to
year by Parliament, I could pledge myself at the time only then for the continuation
of this important monograph of yours, if in the new financial year which begins on
1 July, the funds have remained sufficient, as well as in later time.

Then there is still another difficulty to overcome. According to the departmental
regulations, I can only refer invoices of £10 and
under that
are on my own authority directly from my institution to the Treasury for payment.
Thus if I brought the whole £38 required by you to account in
one
sum, I would first have to request special permission of the Chief Secretary and
perhaps have other difficulties. These could be got round, if you send me
one
or
two
plates each in the edition of a hundred, whenever ready, with a receipt reading as
follows:

I could then send such a receipt immediately after arrival to the Treasury here, from
which the sum would then soon be raised, in order to make it payable by postal order
to you in Lund.
It would probably be best if the lithographs only of
one
species came at a time, because then the little parcel would not become too large
and probably be carried by parcel post (even if in two parts) from there and the corresponding
pages of descriptions could certainly also come
for them
by post. Payment and dispatch would be simplified in this way. The binding in decades
could be done
here
, whenever 10 species are dealt with.

In O. Nordstedt to M, September 1891 (in this edition as 91-09-00o), Nordstedt expressed doubt about M's being able to send a postal order direct to
Sweden and asked for the full amount of £38 to be sent in one tranche. It was, however, paid in instalments; see the receipt O. Nordstedt to M,1 February
1892 (in this edition as 92-02-01a) with a final payment announced in M to O. Nordstedt, 14 April 1892.
