Letter not found. The text given here is from Revue des sciences naturelles appliquées, vol. 36, 1889, pp. 937-8 (B89.11.01). It is introduced by 'M. Raveret-Wattel communique l'extrait suivant d'une lettre qui lui est adressée par M. le Dr baron von Mueller, botaniste du gouvernement à Melbourne' ['Mr Raveret-Wattel communicates the following excerpt from a letter addressed to him by Dr. Baron von Mueller, government botanist at Melbourne']. It is dated to July 1889 as the earliest likely date that it could have been sent, given the uncertainty about the supply expressed in M to O. Tepper, 25 June 1889 (in this edition as 89-06-25a); in any case it must have been sent no later than the beginning of September 1889, in order to be read at the meeting of the Council of the Société Nationale d'acclimatation de France held on 11 October 1889.

tout nouvellement récoltées. Cette espèce est la seule, peut-être, à l'exception de l'E. Gunnii, dont les Moutons acceptent le feuillage, qui n'a qu'un goût peu prononcé. Mais, alors que l'E. Gunnii croît seulement dans les régions humides, l'E. corynocalyx est une espèce du désert; ce qui peut la rendre particulièrement intéressante à introduire dans les parties sèches de l'Algérie, comme plante fourragère d'été. Peut-être même serait-il possible de naturaliser cet Eucalyptus dans le Sahara, où il rendrait de grands services pour l'alimentation des Chameaux.

[Mr. Raveret-Wattel stressed the interest of the generous sending by Baron von Mueller, to whom the Society already owes so many and precious donations of seeds that have greatly contributed to the spread, in the Mediterranean region, of Australian plants useful to various purposes.]

Eucalyptus corynocalyx

Search for Eucalyptus corynocalyx in

seeds for the Acclimatisation Society. This species is the only one, perhaps, with the exception of E. Gunnii , of which sheep accept the foliage, which has only little taste. But, while the E. Gunnii grows only in moist areas, E. Corynocalyx is a desert species; which can make it particularly interesting to introduce into the dry parts of Algeria as a summer forage plant. Perhaps it would be possible to naturalize this Eucalyptus in the Sahara, where it would render great services for the feeding of camels.
