A member of the staff of the Chief Secretary's Office asked: '?Should extracts from attached letter go to Baron Von Mueller & Mr Guilfoyle'. On 4 April T. Wilson, Under Secretary, replied: 'Yes — It would be only proper & what Dr K. evidently desires'.
The attached letter, written by Surgeon K. R. Kirtikar, H. M's Bombay Army, was written from Adelaide on 25 March 1889 and addressed to the 'Under Secretary to Government, Victoria'. Kirtikar, as the only Indian delegate at the Intercolonial Medical Congress held in Melbourne in January 1889, wished to thank the Premier and the government for their generous treatment of him during the Congress, and for donations of botanical and scientific publications for the Bombay Natural History Society. He particularly wished 'to express my deep sense of indebtedness to the veteran Savant Baron Sir Ferd. von Müeller whose hand has been as liberal as yours in favoring me with a valuable Educational Collection of Victorian Plants. He has furthered my botanical research in an able and generous manner.' For M's acknowledgment, see M to T. Wilson, 11 April 1889. See also M to T. Wilson, 19 January 1889, and M to [A. Deakin], 12 February 1889 (in this edition as 89-02-12a).
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient Servant
