Sehr erfreulich war es mir, geehrter Herr Holtze, die Blüthen des Bambus zu erlangen; — u gelang es mir, darnach festzustellen, dass es eine echte ist, obwohl es wünschenswerth bleibt, die Körner gereift zu erlangen, um diese generische Stellung zu bestätigen.

Es sind jetzt nahe 200 ceen aus den Tropenländern bekannt, u. diese sind in eine Anzahl verschiedener Genera vertheilt, so dass der reife Same auch nöthig ist, um das genaue Genus anzugeben. Da Sie die Blüthen im Nov. fanden, sollte der Same wohl im Jan. oder Februar reif sein.

Nun möchte ich Sie bitten, mir eine recht genaue u vollständige Mittheilung über die Höhe, den Wuchs, den Standort, die geographische Verbreitung dieser zu machen; — mir auch freundlichst mitzutheilen, ob Sie mit Mr Fölsche darin übereinstimmen, dass dort noch eine zweite (kleinere?) Art vorkommt.

Wir kennen aus ganz Australien nur ausser Ihrer Art noch eine andere cea in sehr beschränkter Verbreitung am Daintree u einigen anderen Flüssen im Nordöstl. Queensland, aber das wird wohl nicht eine echte sein; so ist die Ermittlung der 2 oder 3 austral Arten von besonders hohem Interesse !

Ich habe Trichosanthes Holtzei in den Druck gesandt; Sie erinnern wohl die mit weissen gefranzten Blumen; um die Beschreibung zu vollenden hätte ich gern reife Früchte dieser schönen Schlingpflanze.

Ich würde rathen, eine starke Wurzel mit Schösslingen des zur Ausstellung nach Adelaide zu senden; möchte auch gern selbst eine Wurzel haben.

Die geschickten Blüthen waren eigentlich für genaue Untersuchung noch zu jung.

I was very pleased, esteemed Mr Holtze, to obtain the flowers of the bamboo, and as a result I succeeded in determining that it is a true , although it remains desirable to acquire ripened seeds to confirm this generic position.

Nearly 200 are now known from tropical countries, and these are divided into a number of different genera, so that the ripe seed is also necessary, to specify the correct genus. As you found the flowers in November, the seed ought to be ripe in January or February.

I now want to ask you to provide me with a very exact and complete notice on the height, the growth habit, the locality, and the geographical distribution of this . Please be so kind to tell me also, whether you agree with Mr Foelsche, that a second (smaller?) species occurs there .

Apart from your species we know only one other cea from the whole of Australia with a very limited distribution at the Daintree and a few other rivers in north-eastern Queensland, but that will probably not be a true ; so the ascertaining of the 2 or 3 Australian species is of particularly great interest !

I would advise that you send a strong root with shoots of the to the Exhibition in Adelaide;

Jubilee International Exhibition, Adelaide, 1887; the list of Holtze’s exhibits does not include any bamboo (Scott (1887), pp. 253-4).

I would also like to have a root myself.

The flowers you sent were really still too young for an accurate examination.
