Es liegt mir ob, edler Herr, Ihnen für mehrere wichtige litterarische Zusendungen
meinen besten Dank auszusprechen, besonders für Ihre letzte prächtige Monographie
u auch für den ausgezeichneten Catalog der dortigen botanischen Bibliothek, wie ihn
Herr Hofrath v Herder zusammenstellte. Ich freue mich, dass meine Werke in diesem
Verzeichnis so wohl vertreten sind, werde aber doch noch Einiges — wie es habhaft
wird — zur Vervollständigung senden müssen.
Die Abhandlung über G. Forsters Abbildungen von polynesischen Pflanzen ist auch wichtig;
ich möchte darauf hinweisen, dass ich über die Charactere u die Synonymie der
mich in dem Anhang zu Campbells New Hebrides vor einem Dutzend Jahren ausgesprochen
habe. Der enorme Andrang von Arbeiten im Departement, vermehrt durch die Obliegenheiten
für Welt-Ausstellungen, hat mich nicht viel thun lassen bisher an den Pflanzen [von]
Neu Guinea in neuerer Zeit, so dass die Widmung erst später Ihnen wird zukommen können.

It devolves on me, noble Sir, to express my best thanks to you for several important
literary sendings, in particular for your last splendid monograph,
also for the excellent catalogue of the botanical library there, compiled by your
Privy-Councillor von Herder.
I am pleased that my publications are so well represented in this catalogue, but
will have to send a few further items as they become available, to make it complete.
The paper on G. Forster's illustrations of Polynesian plants
is also important; but I would like to point out that I commented on the characters
and synonymy of
in the apppendix to Campbell's book on the New Hebrides a dozen years ago.
The enormous pressure of work in the Department, multiplied by the responsibilities
towards the International Exhibitions, has not permitted me to do much work on the
plants of New Guinea in recent times, so that the dedication in your honour cannot
be made until a later date.
