This letter was first registered as B84/2646 in the Chief Secretary's Department then
referred to the Premier.
18/3/84.
T. R. Wilson Esqre
Undersecretary.
Sir
In reply to your last memorandum
I have the honor to inform you, that the Customs Entries, Landing, Warehousing, Cartage,
Lighterage, transshipment charges insurance agents commission and freight for the
Giant-
in London and from thence to St. Petersburg amounted to £15.8.6, which sum was paid
by myself, and for which payment I have a receipt from Mess. Watson & Scull, Shipping
Agents, Thames-Street, London. The expenses for landing, conveyance from the Port
to the botanic Garden in Petersburg and locating this Giant Fern there were defrayed
by the Director of that great and magnificent institution, and this expenditure must
have been very large, as a wall of one of the Conservatories had to be pulled down,
to admit this extraordinary specimen, no door of any of the Glasshouses being large
enough for entrance of this fern there.
