Wilson wrote to the Premier on 7 March: 'From the attached reply of the Government
Botanist it appears that the whole of the expense has been charged to the votes of
his Department. Baron von Mueller's minute of the 30th March 1883 on the attached
file 42984 [see footnotes to M to G. Berry, 19 March 1883] (which has already been referred for the information of the Hon. the Premier) shows
the circumstances under which the fern was sent to St. Petersburg'. E. Thomas, Secretary
to the Premier, replied the next day: 'I beg to point out that the Despatch from the
Secretary of State refers to the cost of transport to
St Petersburgh
— the within memorandum only gives cost of transport to
London
'.
