Heute nur, dass Ihre gut angekommen. Es ist wirklich ein merkwürdiger Coloss und ganz gesund Wir mussten die Mauer unserer Gewächshauses einreissen lassen, um die Pflanze in den Schatten des andern hohen stellen zu können. Hat unterwegs getrieben, aber es kommen noch junge Blätter heraus. Vorläufig herzlich Dank, es wird jetzt in unsern Zeitungen angezeigt und besprochen, sende Abzug.

Auch Kiste mit Gemälde angekommen ; werde solche gut aufheben bis 1884.

Für unsere Austelling würde die zu spät gekommen sein, werden sehen, ob es möglich ist solche nächster aus zu stellen, — jedenfalls aber wird solche dem Preisgericht zur Beurtheilung vorgestellt.

Ein offizieller Dank von Seiten unserer Regierung an die Colonialregierung in Victoria wird besorgt werden. Meine Vorstellungen werden gemacht.

Transport war frei bis Petersburg. Welche Summen müssen Sir aber gezahlt haben!!! 7£ zahlten wir allein für Transport vom Schiff bis zum Botanischen Garten, Hafengebühren etc.

St. Petersburg, 2/14 June 1883

Honored colleague and dear friend

To day I will only just announce the safe arrival of your . It is really a remarkable colossus and thoroughly sound. We had to pull down the wall of our conservatory, to be able to place the plant among the tall . It has sprouted on the passage, but there are more fronds coming. For the present sincere thanks; it is announced in our newspapers and the affair has been commented upon; I send extract.

Also your case with paintings has arrived; I shall take care of them till 1884.

Regel is presumably referring to flower paintings by Ellis Rowan that in 1884 were awarded a gold medal at St Petersburg's International Exhibition of Horticulture. See also M to E. Regel, 14 December 1884.

For our exhibition the would have arrived too late; we will see if it is possible to show it next year; at all events it will be submitted to the judges for their opinion.

The freight was paid to St. Petersburg; what expenses you must have had! We had to pay £7 for transport from the ship to the Botanic Garden, harbour-dues, etc.
