The date could be '1' or '7'. Tepper's index to the letters has this item listed as 7 February, and his reply cited above refers to the letter of 7 February; however, the reference below to M to R. Owen, 1 February 1881 indicates that Tepper misread the date.

Ihren Aufsatz über die Orchideen, lieber Herr Tepper, habe ich mit Vergnügen gelesen. Ihre vielseitigen Beobachtungen sind anerkennswerth, u. sollten auf die Befruchtung dieser Pflanzen durch die Hülfe von Insekten ausgedehnt werden, zumal da Sie ein so gewandter Entomologe sind.

ist von Ihnen wohl übersehen; sie ist der D. palustris ähnlich aber grösser.

Für Ihre gütigen Notizen über das Melitose-Insekt fühle ich mich Ihnen sehr verpflichtet. Ich hoffe, dass es uns möglich sein wird, die "Lerp" gebenden Insekten richtig specifisch zu identificiren, was ich durch die Vermittlung meines vieljährigen Freunds Prof Owen, erreichen könnte, wenn Sie mir Exemplare gütig zur Versendung an diesen grossen Gelehrten, der mehrere Entomologen unter sich hat am britischen Museum, zuwenden wollen.
Ich bin jetzt dem Insekte auf die Spur gekommen, welches die Melitose von Euc viminalis aufsondert u sende es mit der Post morgen an Prof Owen, um den unbestreitbar richtigen Namen zu erlangen.
Owen schrieb vor einiger Zeit, dass der Name des ganz kleinen Thierchens nach der vorliegenden Materialen von seinen Specialisten nicht ermittelt werden könne.
Die Samen sehr erwünscht.

is probably overlooked by you; it is similar to D. palustris but larger.
Can your red -flowering Thelymitra not perhaps be T. carnea?

Letter not found.
I hope that it will be possible for us to specifically identify the "lerp"-giving insect correctly, which I could get through the good offices of my friend of many years Professor Owen if you will kindly send me specimens for dispatch to this great savant, who has several entomologists under him at the British Museum.
I am now getting on to the track of the melitose-secreting insect of
Eucalyptus viminalis

Owen wrote some time ago that the name of the quite little creature could not be determined by his specialists from the material to hand.
