Let me express my full sympathy with you in your illness, dear Mr Kippist. It is no
wonder, that after the toil of half a century you should feel mentally prostrated;
but relaxation and - if possible - travelling will doubtless restore you to full health
again. When I feel my strength gone & get ill, I have not the comfort of a kind family
round me, such as you have.
I have sent the notice of their election to Dr Curl,
Mr J E Brown
and Mr P OShanesy,
and doubtless they will all respond at once to the monetary call. If not, they must
simply be omitted out of the Rank of the Linnéans.
1
S. M. Curl, elected Fellow, 17 April 1879. See M to the Linnean Society of London,
January 1879 (in this edition as 79-01-00b).
2
J. E. Brown, elected 1 May 1879. See M to the Linnean Society of London, January 1879
(in this edition as 79-01-00c), and J. E. Brown to M, 22 August 1879.

See M to the Linnean Society of London, January 1879 (in this edition as 79-01-00d).The Linnean Society Fellows List of 1881 records P. A. O’Shanesy as being elected
1 May 1880, and living in Adelaide, S.A. Given the disorganized state of the Linnean
Society’s affairs and records with Kippist’s illness, it would seem that the election
and address, noted on his certificate as 1 May 1879 and Cometville, Qld, were incorrectly
recorded (see Gage & Stearn (1988), p. 74).
Pray remember me kindly to our old and excellent friend, Dr Milligan.

Joseph Milligan.
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
