Dear Sir Ferdinand.
By last mail from England I had the honor of receiving notice of my having been elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society. This is an honor which I appreciate very much I can assure you, and for which I have to tender you my very best thanks.

Brown was elected FLS on 1 May 1879. For his nomination certificate, see M to the Linnean Society of London, January 1879 (in this edition as 79-01-00c). See also see R. Kippist to M, 18 September 1879, and M to R. Kippist, 23 November 1879 (in this edition as 79-11-23a).
I think the more of it from the fact of you — who are so well-known in the Botanical world — having been my proposer. Since my arrival in S. Australia I have received much kindness from you in many ways, the remembrance of which will always afford me very great pleasure indeed. I have again to thank you for your friendship.
I enclose for your inspection, a branchlet — with pods — of our "Box" here (E. eleosa

) and by same post send you specimen of the bark of a matured tree of the same species.
Believe me,
Dear Sir Ferdinand
Yours very truly,
J. E. Brown
