Ihr gütiger Brief v. 10 März, hochverehrter Herr Director, liegt mir zur Beantwortung vor, u. zunächst muss ich um Ihre Nachsicht ansuchen, wenn ich so oft es verfehlte eingehend die freundlichen Briefe zu nennen, die von Ihnen ankamen. Das Factum ist, dass ich etwa 3000 Briefe im Jahre schreibe, u. häufig mich auf blosses Gedächtniss stütze bei dieser fast endlosen Correspondenz theils im Departement, theils mit wissenschaftlichen Freunden in fast allen Theilen der Erde.
Wie ich Ihnen bereits mittheilte, ist ein Crocodil von Ostaustralien an Sie abgesandt, u zwar ein grosses Ex. um Ihnen bloss zu zeigen, dass ich keine Anstrengungen u auch keine Ausgaben scheue, um Ihren Wünschen zu genugen, lege ich für Ihre blosse Belehrung die Rechnung von Rockhampton bei. Dies eine Thier, bis es zu Ihnen gelangt, wird allein £12 - £13 kosten; indessen ich bringe Ihnen und Ihren Anstalt nach aller Ihrer Grossmuth gern dies Opfer, zumal da das Aufstellen dort auch noch immer recht viel kosten macht. Wäre ich mit Geldgütern mehr gesegnet, könnte ich noch mehr thun. Vielleicht heitern sich doch noch meine Verhältnisse auch in dieser Hinsicht auf.
Ich habe Orden gegeben an den Sammler in King George's Sound, eine neue Fisch-Sammlung herzustellen, um das Beschädigte zu ersetzen. Einige Crustacea werden dann auch dabei sein. Die Käfer sollen £30 kosten, die Longicornia; also musste ich wissen ob solche auch dort bearbeitet werden könnten.
Um eines möchte ich recht sehr bitten, nämlich dass von künftigen Dubletten zuerst das Rostocker-Museum versorgt würde, falls dort Raum ist, u. die Direction Mittel hat, die Transit Kosten von Stuttgart nach Rostock zu zahlen. Ich möchte meiner Vaterstadt doch gern auch Einiges des Überzähligen zuwenden.
Möge Ihnen, edler Freund, inmitten Ihrer rastlosen Thätigkeit doch Gesundheit bleiben. Sie haben doch wenigstens ein beglückendes Familien Leben. Mein Haus ist bei der bisherigen Ungunst der Verhältnisse verödet geblieben

Es ist dies nicht genug, um eine Sendung zu machen, doch sehen Sie wenigstens, dass ich für Sie weiter arbeite. Die Gegenstände in den Fässern per Excelsior, die im vorigen Jahre geschickt wurden, waren alle von Port Darwin . Das Missverständniss mag entstanden sein, indem der Name Palmerston (die Stadt am Port Darwin) mit dem Palmer-River verwechselt wurde.

highly revered Director, is here for my answer, and first of all I must ask for your forbearance, if I so often failed to mention in detail the friendly letters that come from you. The fact is that I write about 3000 letters a year, and frequently I rely on mere memory in this almost endless correspondence, partly in the department, partly with scientific friends in almost all parts of the world.

a crocodile from East Australia has been sent to you, in fact a large specimen, merely in order to show you that I spare no efforts and also no expenditure to satisfy your requests, I enclose the invoice from Rockhampton merely for your information.

This one animal, until it reaches you, will alone cost £12-£13; nevertheless I gladly make this sacrifice for you and your institution after all your generosity, especially since the setting up still involves very much expense too. Were I more blessed with money, I could do even more. Perhaps my circumstances will yet brighten up in this respect.

to make a new fish collection to replace the damaged one. Some crustacea will also be present. The beetles are said to cost £30, the Longicornia, therefore I must know whether such can also be worked on there.
I should very much like to ask for one thing, namely that the Rostock Museum be the first supplied from future duplicates if there is room there and the directorate has the means to pay the transit costs from Stuttgart to Rostock. I should indeed like my home town to have some of the surplus .
May you, noble friend, remain in good health in the midst of your tireless activity. You do have at least a happy family life.
My house has remained desolate with the present adversity of conditions.

I saw a sister of Miss Bromby some days ago.

Another daughter of Dr. Bromby, headmaster of Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, was visiting Europe, and Krauss had looked after her; see M to F. von Krauss, 12 January 1879.

There is not enough to make a consignment, but at least you see that I am continuing working for you. The objects in the barrels per Excelsior that were sent last year were all from Port Darwin . The misunderstanding may have originated by the name Palmerston (the town at Port Darwin) being mixed up with the Palmer River.

In the surviving draft of part of Krauss's letter to M of 10 March 1879 (see n. 3 above), Krauss sought clarification regarding the provenance of some fishes and reptiles that he had received from M. According to a letter he had received from M, these were from the Palmer River, Qld, but according to the marking on the barrel they were from Port Darwin.
