Colonial Secretary's Office
Wellington 6th October 1874
Sir
Dr Hector has handed to this Department your letter to him of the 10th of August last
on the subject of the conservation of Colonial forests, in which you suggest that
a new edition of your "forest trees and industrial plants" should be brought out in
New Zealand; and are so good as to say that you give your gratuitous consent to the
publication, and kindly offer to make an alphabetical re-arrangement of the three
portions and a new grouping as a key to the whole, and to give some additional, as
yet unpublished, notes together with a geographical index, which is ready
I am directed by the Colonial Secretary Dr Pollen, to acknowledge with thanks your
kind offer, and to request that you will favour the Government by sending over a copy
of your original work with such additions and alterations as you may think advisable
for a new edition.

The file copy of this letter contains an additional sentence that has been struck
through: 'The book shall be put into the hands of the Govt Printer without delay,
with the view of its being issued from the press during the recess of Parliament.'
I am obliged to ask you to send a copy as our Parliamentary library does not contain
one, & Dr Hector has mislaid his.
