Sir
In compliance with your request, conveyed in your communication of the 3 inst.
I have the honor to submit herewith a return of all plants, seeds, cuttings &c furnished
from the botanic Garden during the year 1870. The only entries, which are not made,
are those of fresh medicinal herbs, flowers or roots, supplied to patients on request
of legitimate practioners,
further fresh leaves of the White Mulberry trees for Silkworm-food, also flowers for
objects of drawing or painting or modelling &c, which to enter it was deemed a mere
waste of time. The plants, supplied to churches, schools, cemeteries and other public
institutions were to a very great extent strong pot-grown plants. Should the return
be required to be still more explicative, then it can be enlarged.

Letter not found, but evidently one of those referred to in an annotation to M to
J. Casey, 29 April 1873; see n. 3 to that letter.

The list is followed in the file by an analysis of the data along the lines called
for by Minister Casey, headed 'General Summary of Distributions from Melbourne Botanic Gardens during the year 1870'.
The analysis comprises a tabulated 'General Analysis of Distributions from Melbourne
Botanic Garden for year 1870', followed by detailed tables in which the information
provided by M is rearranged so as to correspond to the categories of distribution
shown in the general analysis: 'Foreign Distributions from Melb. Bot. Gard Year 1870',
'Return of distributions from the Botanic Garden of Melbourne to Churches in Victoria
during the year 1870', 'Distribution of Plants &c to Public Buildings and Grounds in Victoria from Melb.
Bot. Gardens 1870', and 'Distribution of Plants &c from Melb. Botanic Garden to Private
bodies and individuals during the year 1870'. There is a further, short list, 'Distribution
of Plants &c to Public bodies and Individuals in Victoria (from the Melbourne Bot.
Garden) during the year 1870', for which there is no corresponding line in the general
analysis. For the purposes of the analysis, 'foreign' is defined to refer to all distributions
'to places beyond the Booundary of Victoria'.
