Would it be possible, dear Dr Hooker, that I could be obliged with a box ful of roots of ? Perhaps Prof Asa Gray would help in the matter.

This plant in its marvellous effect on the circulation prevents the fibrin-deposits in aneurism & reduces these in an extraordinar manner. I would like therefore to cultivate the plant in Australia. Perhaps might be had at the same time. Pray do not forget a few roots of Eriophorum polystachy[ar]um.

E. polystachyum (a name not in current use, but in, for example, T. Jones (1875), p. 578), or E. polystachion, M's spelling in B80.04.04, p. 15? See also M to J. Hooker, 14 August 1869 (in this edition as 69-08-14c). The roots requested reached M in January 1870; see M to J. Hooker, 29 January 1870.
