Sir
I have the honor to solicit that you will be pleased to advance to me from the treasury
the sum of thirty pounds sterling (£30.- .-), which amount you desired me to expend in procuring seeds of forest trees in this country for the Madras
Government.

On 26 August 1864, the Governor's office had written to M to authorize a sum of £30
to be spent on seeds for Madras (letter not found; acknowledged in M to H. Warde,
27 August 1864). On 14 September 1864, the Under Secretary, J. Moore, minuted 'The Director of the
Botanic Gardens is informed that the sum he requires will be advanced to him by the
Treasury on his signing the enclosed application and returning it to this office'.
M returned the application the next day adding: 'Signed accordingly with thanks';
Moore instructed: 'Advance application for £30 counter signed and forwarded to the
Honble the Treasurer'. On 29 September 1864, E. S. Symonds minuted:
'Returned to the Under Secy — The advance act. [account] has been posted for payment'.
The availability of the seeds for shipment was notified to J. McCulloch, 12 September
1864 (in this edition as 64-09-12b).
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller
M.D.
The honorable the Chief Secretary
