I heard from Moore of Sydney that, though v. Mueller continues the nominal Director
of the Melbourne Garden, a Mr. Ferguson
is virtually the Director having charge of the work in it, and that von Mueller is
now really only the Government Botanist, and that he is in low spirits about it. I
wrote some time ago congratulating v. Mueller upon being relieved from the mere garden
duties,
thinking it would be a pleasant arrangement for him and not expecting it would have
annoyed him. It makes one fear that his love of science does not sufficiently predominate
over his appetite for κυδος
