Lieber Freund,

Sie werden lange auf einen Brief von mir gewartet haben, vielleicht ein wenig schneller, wozu Sie auch Ursache haben, da Sie den Grund meines Schweigens nicht wissen. Ich habe Ihnen wohl früher schon mitgetheilt, dass mir mit Umarbeitung der Pharmacopea sowie Ausarbeitung einer neuen Arzneitaxe nach dem Grammengewicht vom Senat eine grosse Arbeit aufgebürdet war, die im September fertig sein musste. Ich hatte mich effectiv krank gearbeitet, so dass mich der Arzt im Anfange August in ein Ostseebad schickte. Nach meiner Rückkehr fesselte mich eine Unterleibsentzündung längere Zeit ans Bett, ich konnte eine daraus entstandene Schwäche lange nicht loswerden. Unsere Angelegenheiten haben sich durch diese jetzt überwundenen Unannehmlichkeiten verzögert, indess habe ich Ihnen doch die Sendungen übermittelt u das Geld ist im Besitze der Kultus Minist. Kasse in Stuttgart. Wenn Sie, was ich hoffe, in Dresden gewesen sind, so wird die erste Kiste Sie erst nach der Rückkehr getroffen haben. Hoffentlich sind die beiden Fässer mit Fischen, sowie der Stamm von

nach, ich kann erst morgen oder übermorgen dazu gelangen, die nach Berlin, Wien, München u.s.w. bestimmten Drucksachen u Samenpakete auszusuchen u muss dann eine besondere Kiste für Sie packen. Dr Müller schreibt mir, dass der alte Martius ihn gebeten habe um Vogelbälge, er hat ihm aber nicht darauf geantwortet, wenn ich recht verstehe, sondern schreibt mir in seinem letzten Briefe ich möge Sie bitten, von den überzähligen Doubletten dem alten Martius etwas abzulassen. — Die in der neu angekommenden Kiste enthaltenen Bücher sind eine ganze Reihe von Bänden von der Londoner Zoolog. Society's Proceedings, die unser Freund sich eben angeschafft hatte, als er das Werk von der Zoolog. Society geschenkt erhielt. Er meint, wenn Sie das Werk nicht in Stuttgart gebrauchen können, werde es für Tübingen vielleicht werthvoll sein. Wegen des Stipendiums werden sie das Hauptsächlichste mit dem Ministerium verabredet haben. Müller schrieb mir es wäre ihm lieb, wenn in dem gegenwärtigen Jahre von dieser seiner Stiftung noch nichts veröffentlicht werde, nacher hat er nichts dagegen. Ueber das zweite oder Vergrösserung dieses ersten ein ander Mal.

Es freut mich, dass in Dresden nicht die Wahl für Hamburg die Majorität erhalten hat, da unsere zum Theil unangenehmen Verhältnisse zwischen Senat u dem demokratischen Theil unserer Bürgerschaft erst beseitigt sein müssen, bevor wir mit Anstand die Naturforscher empfangen können. Inspruck

ist übrigens ein schöner Punkt, der zahlreiche Besucher hin ziehen wird. Ich begreife eigentlich nicht, weshalb Rostock, das doch zweimal eingeladen hat, nicht vorgeschlagen ist, der Ort ist hübsch, reich u hat doch viel mehr zu bieten als Greifswald u Königsberg.

Es soll mir lieb sein zu hören, dass Ihre Gesundheit sich gebessert hat, u das werde ich wohl erfahren, wenn die abzusendende Kiste in Ihren Händen ist.

Ich habe das Geld einfach an die Kultus-Ministerialkasse geschickt ohne weitere Bemerkungen als dass ich um Empfangsanzeige gebeten, ich wusste nicht, in wessen Hände die Zuschrift gelangt u dachte, das Uebrige könnten wir am besten abmachen. Entschuldigen Sie, wenn ich damit vielleicht einen Fehler gemacht habe.

Dear friend,

You will have waited a long time for a letter from me, perhaps a little more quickly, for which you also have cause, because you do not know the reason for my silence. I have probably already told you that a large task was imposed upon me by the Senate with the reworking of the Pharmacopoea as well as the development of the new drug price according to the gram weight, which must be finished in September. I had effectively worked myself sick, so that the doctor sent me to a Baltic sea resort at the beginning of August. After my return, an abdominal inflammation confined me to bed for a long time. For a long while I could not get rid of an infirmity resulting from it. Our affairs have been delayed by these troubles now overcome; in the meantime, however, I have sent you the consignments and the money is in the possession of the Culture Ministry's treasury in Stuttgart. If you have been in Dresden, as I hope, you will find the first crate only after your return. It is to be hoped both the barrels with fish as well as the trunk of

, which I sent off while confined to my room, have arrived safely. The list of the contents of the barrels follows herewith. A crate with various items will follow in the next week. I can only get to taking out the printed matter and seed packets destined for Berlin, Vienna, Munich and so on tomorrow or the day after, and then I have to pack a crate especially for you. Dr Mueller writes to me that old Martius has asked him for bird skins; but he has not answered him, if I understand correctly, but writes to me in his last letter that I should ask you to let old Martius have something from the surplus duplicates. The books contained in the newly arrived crate are a whole series of volumes of the London Zoological Society's Proceedings that our friend had just acquired when he received the work presented by the Zoological Society. He thinks if the work cannot be used in Stuttgart, it will perhaps be of value for Tübingen. With regard to the scholarship, you will have arranged the principal matters with the Ministry. Mueller writes to me he would prefer it if nothing was published yet in the present year about his scholarship.

Afterwards he has nothing against it. Another time about the second or increase of this first one.

I am pleased that the choice of Hamburg did not receive the majority in Dresden, because our sometimes unpleasant relations between Senate and the democratic part of our citizens must first be resolved before we can receive the naturalists with dignity. Innsbruck is after all a more beautiful spot that will attract numerous visitors. I really do not understand why Rostock, which has bid twice, is not recommended. The place is pretty, rich and certainly has much more to offer than Greifswald and Königsberg.

At the 42nd Congress of German Naturalists and Physicians (Versammlung Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte) held in Dresden in September 1868, it was decided to hold the next Congress at Innsbruck. The Congress after that was held in Rostock.

I shall be pleased to hear that you health has improved and I will probably ascertain that when the crate to be sent off is in your hands.

I have simply sent the money to the Cultural Ministry's Treasury, without further remarks except requesting a notice of receipt. I do not know into whose hands the communication arrived and thought we could best sort out the rest. Pardon me if perhaps I have made an error with this.
