Lieber Herr Professor

Mit dem besten Dank für Ihren Brief vom vorigen Monat, worüber ich Dr Müller sofort berichtet habe, kann ich Ihnen heute die Nachricht bringen, dass gestern wiederum eine Kiste angekommen ist, aus der ich nur die für andere Bekannte bestimmete n Drucksachen herauszunehmen habe um alsdann das Uebrige an Sie abzusenden, welches in einigen Tagen geschehen soll. Ausser einer Anzahl Vogelbälge finden Sie meistens Bücher u dergl;

das Heft mit photographischen Bildern aus der Melbourner Ausstellung sowie die Ansichten oder Landschaftsbilder von Australien möchten wohl höheren Orts einer Beachtung werth gehalten werden. Was Ihnen am liebsten sein wird, ist eine kleine Kiste worin der schöne Argonaut. Nehmen Sie sich beim Auspacken in Acht; in der Muschel stecken noch zwei kleine in Baumwolle gewickelt. Das Ganze ist sorgfältig eingepackt u wird unverletzt in Ihre Hände gelangen. Wegen des Thieres habe ich unserm Freund Ihren Wunsch kund gegeben. Die gegenwärtige Sendung ist von Queenscliff effectirt, wo Müller sich längere Zeit aufgehalten u wie es scheint, seine Gesundheit mit Erfolg gestärkt hat. Er wollte bald wieder eine Kiste absenden; er hatte sich verschiedene Ihrer Desiderata verschafft, einige aber meint er, seien gar nicht in Australien zu Hause. Sie werden finden, dass, wenn auch manches Bekannte in den Sendungen wiederholt ankommt, doch immer etwas Neues dabei ist. Mit Vögeln aus Australien werden Sie wohl bald zu Markt ziehen können. Vertauschen oder verschenken Sie den Ueberschuss nach Belieben, ich wusste nichts damit anzufangen, in unserem hiesigen Museum liegen Massen von Thierbälgen aufgespeichert u harren vielleicht noch lange des Aufstellens oder Ausstopfens. Unser zoologischer Garten liefert nun auch täglich so schöne Sachen. Wenn wir hier nur mehr wissenschaftliche Arbeitskraft hätten.

Ich bin noch in vollem Umzuge, das getrocknete Heu, Herbarium genannt, hat mir vielen Kummer verursacht, erst sammelt man, dann möchte man es los sein u kann sich doch nicht davon trennen.

Bitte theilen Sie mir Ihre Meinung über den Argonaut mit.

Ich erlaubte mir, ein Paar von Dr Müller nach Süddeutschland bestimmte Bücher in Ihre Kiste zu legen u bitte um gelegentliche Weiterbeförderung. Ich habe noch 26 andere zu besorgen.

I can now inform you that another box arrived yesterday, from which I only need to remove the printed matter intended for other acquaintances and then send the rest to you, which should happen in a few days. Apart from a number of bird skins, you will find mostly books and the like; the booklet with photographs from the Melbourne exhibition

and the views or landscape pictures of Australia are likely to be considered worthy of attention in higher circles. What you will like best is a small box containing the beautiful Argonaut.

Be careful when unpacking; there are two more small ones wrapped in cotton inside the shell. Everything is carefully packed and will reach you undamaged. I have informed our friend of your request regarding the animal. The current shipment was sent from Queenscliff,

where Mueller has been staying for some time and, it seems, has successfully improved his health. He wanted to send another box soon; he had obtained several of your desiderata, but he thinks that some of them are not native Australia at all. You will find that, even though some familiar items arrive repeatedly in the shipments, there is always something new in them. You will soon be able to go to market with birds from Australia. Exchange or give away the surplus as you wish; I didn't know what to do with them. Our local museum has masses of animal skins stored away, perhaps waiting a long time to be displayed or stuffed. Our zoological garden now also supplies such beautiful things every day. If only we had more scientific manpower here.

I am still in the midst of moving. The dried hay, called a herbarium, has caused me a lot of grief. First you collect it, then you want to get rid of it, but you can't bring yourself to part with it.

Please let me know your opinion about the Argonaut.

I took the liberty of putting a couple of books from Dr Mueller intended for southern Germany in your box and would ask you to forward them when convenient. I still have 26 others to deal with.
