M carried vol. 1 of Lehmann’s work with him to Australia in 1847. It seems likely
that he would have left an order with the publisher
in Hamburg
, Sumptibus Meissneri,
for a copy of the remainder of the work when it appeared, with instructions that this
be sent to Sonder for forwarding to Australia; the present note suggests that the
publisher sent the work to Sonder without explaining that it was for M. M certainly
acquired a copy of the second volume at an early date; see M to W. Hooker, 18 October 1853.
