In reply to your letter of 6th inst.,

I have the honour, by direction of the Council, to express to you the Council's regret that it is unable at present to accede to your request; as it is the invariable custom to elect to the Honorary Membership of the Society only distinguished Naturalists not resident in New South Wales, who have in some way or other become identified with the Society, whereas up to the present the Society has not been honoured with direct intercourse with the distinguished Algologist referred to in your letter.

M had proposed that 'Prof. de Toni of Parma' be elected an Honorary Member of the Linnean Society of NSW; see minutes of the meeting of the Council of the Society held on 23 September 1896, MLMSS 2009/7 Minute book vol. 5, April 1894 - August 1901, p. 178.
This is a matter, however, which perhaps time may rectify; in which case the Council, I feel sure, will not be found wanting in the endeavour adequately to show its appreciation, and to do honour to a distinguished Naturalist
