In September our editor received the following communication from Baron Ferdinand
Mueller, who recently died in Melbourne, Australia].
The letter is dated to early August as the latest likely date that it could have been
written to have been received in Vienna in September.
M's death is announced on p. 421.
hier verhindert, was in Süd-Afrika geschah, Stecklinge von amerikanischen
Vitis

Phylloxera vastatrix
an
Vitis
vinifera
In the interests of your fine
Gartenzeitung
that you always so kindly send me, highly esteemed professor, I would like to make
you aware that great care is necessary to prevent the spreading of
Phylloxera vastatrix
through the shipping of
Vitis
seeds. I received seeds from France as well as from North America of such
Vitis
species, which are proved as resistant against
Phylloxera
and found on unpacking dead bodies of
Phylloxera vastatrix
between the seeds! These creatures must have lived a while among the seeds and found
sustenance on the juice adhering to the seeds. Now if such seeds were to be sowed
without more ado in a country free of
Phylloxera
, a permanent misfortune for the cultivation of
Vitis
would be brought about. So in Australia we have
P. vastatrix
only in two regions and although it is to be anticipated that this terrible little
creature will not remain restricted to both these two regions, we are introducing
the seeds of American
Vitis
species and hybrids into the Australian colonies to limit to a certain extent possible
advancement of the
Phylloxera
. Here and extensively elsewhere the American
Vitis
plants are required only without
Phylloxera
, since in most regions they are not yet necessary as a rescue resource.
It is to be hoped it will be permanently so with further isolation. Here I have mainly
prevented bringing in cuttings of American
Vitis
plants into these colonies,
which happened in South Africa, because
Phylloxera
can and may adhere on such, even if only mechanically, but this possibility is not
wholly excluded with the importation of seeds. There is no thoroughly secure means
of disinfection of cuttings. However, it is within one’s power to get
Phylloxera
-free seeds, if one insists with orders that they are carefully sifted and cleaned
before packing. With my introductions, I have subjected the seeds to these processes
when they arrive here, but not all recipients will show this care and so great harm
may arise through the less experienced. The exporters should so carefully treat the
seeds before dispatch and use a stamp that the wares can be received absolutely risk-free.

Respectfully
Your
Ferdinand v. Mueller.
Perhaps you will kindly allow this report space for publication in your journal.
We have discovered here that it requires a long period of years after the diseased
bushes were pulled out to bring
Phylloxera vastatrix
on
roots to the complete extinction of this terrible insect.
