Octogenar Algen-Dissectionen vorzunehmen und microscopisch zu verwerten Ich kann mir daher vorstellen, wie unerquicklich es für Sie sein muss, mit unzulänglichen Material zu thun zu haben. Die Sammler mit seltenen Ausnahmen in Australien wollen sich nicht die Mühe machen, vollständige Exemplare zu sichern wenn solche wirklich erlangbar sind. Welche Zeit habe ich im Lauf meiner Forschungen nutzlos verschwendet in den Versuchen blumenlose oder fruchtlose Phanerogamen-Arten zu benennen. Wenn die Collectoren das Bibel-Wort "An den Früchten sollt Ihr sie erkennen" auch in dieser Hinsicht in Gedanken behielten, so wären die systematischen Arbeiten leichter für uns Wenn ich bedauerliches Algen-Material dennoch an Sie abzuschicken wagte, so war die Idee, dass Sie leicht das Eine oder Andere dazwischen finden würden von phytogeographischem Werth oder was sonst ohne grosse Mühe benutzt werden könnte. Ich dachte, dass Sie etwa einen Studenten der Universität oder einen Amateur zu Hand hätten, welcher das schlechte Material doch präpariren möchte, wobei dann doch vielleicht not

etwas herausgearbeitet werden könnte. Das Material zurückzusenden wäre nicht rathsam, denn meine Zeit ist so besetzt, dass ich selbst nichts damit thun könnte, und nach J. B. Wilsons Tode beschäftigt sich Niemand in Australien untersuchend mit Algen beschäftigt. Material, welches Ihnen nichts nützt möchte noch immer Bornet, de Toni, Heydrich, Murray, Wright, Holmes, Falkenberg, Reinke, Cramer, Reinbold, Berthold, Kukuk oder sonst einen jüngeren Phycologen Europas für deren Sammlungen willkommen sein, und ich überlasse es ganz Ihrer Wahl, wem Sie solches zuwenden wollen, wenn ich nur weiss wer es hat um Nachfragen der Sammler gerecht zu werden.

highly esteemed Professor, I express my admiration anew that it still possible for you as an octogenarian to carry out dissections of algae and to make use of the microscope. I therefore imagine how fruitless it must be for you to have to do with inadequate material. The collectors in Australia with rare exceptions do not want to take the trouble to secure complete specimens when such are readily acquirable. What time I have wasted uselessly in the course of my research in the attempts to name species of phanerogams without flowers or fruit. If the collectors would keep in mind the biblical words "And by their fruits shall you know them"

Nevertheless when I dared to send off deplorable material to you, the idea was that you would easily find one or another among them of phytogeographical value or what otherwise could be used without great trouble. I thought that you would have had for instance a student of the university or an amateur at hand, who might prepare the bad material, whereby then perhaps something more could be worked out. no-one in Australia is occupying himself investigating algae. Material that is of no use to you might still be welcome to Bornet, de Toni, Heydrich, Murray, Wright, Holmes, Falkenberg, Reinke, Cramer, Reinbold, Berthold, Kuckuck or such other younger phycologists of Europe for their collections, and I leave it completely to your choice to whom you wish to give it, if only I know who has it in order to do justice to the enquiries of the collectors.
