Es war mir ausserordentlich erfreulich, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, dass Herr Baron Walter v. Rothschild sich einverstanden erklärte mit dem so hoffnungsvollen Vorschlag, dass Mr Fitzgerald's kleine Parthie mit seiner ornithologischen Expedition zusammenwirke. Um so mehr bedauere ich, dass der Agent von Mess. Burn Philp & Co beeinflusst wurde die Idee nicht zur Ausführung zu bringen. Die Nachrichten von Mr F. sind bis jetzt so unvollständig, dass ich den besonderen Grund des Nicht zu Standekommens noch nicht weiss. Dennoch gebührt dem gütigen jungen Lord mein bester Dank für die Bereitwilligkeit, mit welcher er in meine Idee einging.
Ach! wie beneide ich ihn um seine inermesslichen Mittel, während ich seit meinem Waisen Alter stets mit endlosen Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen hatte! Hoffentlich werden die Erfolge seiner Papuanischen Sammler recht günstig sich erweisen.

I was extemely pleased, highly esteemed Professor, that Baron Walter von Rothschild gave his agreement to the so promising suggestion that Mr Fitzgerald's small party combine with his ornithological expedition.

I regret it so much the more that the agent of Messrs Burns Philp & Co was influenced not to carry the idea into effect.

It is not known why Burns Philp objected to the proposal that A. S. Anthony join forces with W. V. Fitzgerald, but the collecting for Rothschild by Anthony was through Burns Philp as the agent; see Lucas & Lucas (2014) for correspondence concerning Anthony between Walter Gors of Burns Philp and Ernst Hartert for Rothschild.
The news of Mr Fitzgerald is until now so incomplete that I still do not know the particular reason of non-completion. Nevertheless my best thanks are due to the kindly young lord for the willingness with which he entered into my idea.
O! how I envy him his immense means, whereas I always had to struggle with endless difficulties since my orphan days! Let us hope the success of his Papuan collector will prove to be very favourable.
