This letter was returned to M on 1 June 1896 minuted: 'no objection’. M returned the file on 2 June. The file was returned to
M on 12 August: 'Any objection to [leave]'. He replied to the minute on 14 August;
reply not found. The file was returned to M the same day minuted: '2 days half pay
C S [Chief Secretary]'. M returned the file on 17 August.
In November 1896, after M's death, the 'Officer in charge Botanist’s Department' [presumably
G. Luehmann] 'reports absence of J. Minchin (ill)'. His letter was returned on 23 November minuted '½ days leave appd [i.e. approved]'.
The file was returned on 25 November and on 10 December was referred to 'Dr Shields'
minuted: 'examine Minchin'. It was returned to the Chief Secretary's Office on 11
December.
