absandten, und da heute Mittag die Wochenpost für Europa, Asien u Africa abgeht, kann ich sogleich den Empfang dieser wichtigen Sendung anerkennen mit grössten Dank. Algen-Studien beginnen hier auch mehr und mehr örtlich schon, so dass es vortheilhaft ist, vollständiges Vergleichs Material zu haben, und zwar von Ihnen als Gross-Meister der Algen-Kunde. Sie sind ja auch der Nestor für die Pflanzen-Wissenschaft; und hoffe ich mit Ihren anderen Verehrern, dass Ihnen noch durch manche Jahre Kraft bleiben mag, der Leiter in der Kenntnis der oceanischen Vegetation zu sein. Es sind jetzt nur noch von Denen, Deren Forschungen weit in die erste Hälfte des Jahrhunderts zurück reichen, Hooker, C. Mueller, Naudin, Chatin, Lange, Colmeiro mit mir selbst, und nicht Alle habe deren Arbeiten bis in die neueste Zeit fortgesetzt

Meine eignen Forschungen in der Flora von Schleswig-Holstein begonnen 1839, und mein "Breviarium" war 1845 geschlossen, obwohl es, da ich 1847 auswanderte, erst einige Jahre später erschien. In 1897 werde ich das 50 jährige Jubilaeum des ersten meiner 3 Doctorate,, deo volente, feiern.

Yesterday evening, noble friend, the small parcel of algae arrived which you so kindly sent, and since the weekly post for Europe, Asia and Africa goes off at midday today, I can immediately acknowledge the receipt of this important consignment with the greatest thanks. Already studies of algae are beginning locally more and more, so that it is advantageous to have complete comparative material, and indeed from you as grand master of algal study. You are indeed also the nestor for plant science and I hope with your other admirers, that your powers may remain for many years yet, to be the leader in the knowledge of marine vegetation. There are now of those whose research reaches back far into the first half of the century only Hooker, C. Mueller, Naudin, Chatin, Lange, Colmeiro with me and not all have continued their work up to most recent times.
