Da ich unter dem Eindruck bin, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, dass Sie dort noch nicht
das West-Afrikanische
Wunder-Grass
(
) besitzen, welches ich in alle Australischen Colonien und auch in Polynesien eingeführt
habe, so mache ich eine Versuchs Sendung an Sie durch
diese
Monatspost, indem ich Wurzeln frisch in etwas Moos gepackt und in einem kleinen Cigarren-Kasten
eingeschlossen habe, das Ganze weniger als 10 Unzen (das Post-Limitum für America)
wiegend. This
Panicum das "Coapim" der Neger, reift wie viele andere stark-wurzlige Pflanzen nur
wenig Samen als Keimungsfähig, und dann nur in heissen Zonen. Hier so weit südlich
ist die Vermehrung nur durch Wurzlen, und so wird es auch wohl bei Ihnen sein.
Nun ist die
Frage
wird es mir gelingen die bewurzelten Schösslinge einfach durch die Post zu Ihnen
hinüber zu bringen? Werden diese lebendig bleiben, während des Monats der Reise? Schreiben
Sie mir doch
gleich
nach Ankunft des Kästchens, wenn auch nur einfach auf eine
Post-Karte
, ob die Wurzeln die Reise ausgehalten haben. Ich denke in einem Postsack wird die
Verdunstung gering sein. Viel Feuchtigkeit darf ich ja auch nicht anwenden, denn das
möchte (wie feuchtes] Heu) spontane Ignation verursachen.
Ich sehe mit Spannung weiteren Nachrichten von Ihnen entegegen über die besonderen
Erfolge with
gewissen australischen Salsolaceen auf den Californischen "Alkali"—Boden. Da ich
das Exemplar meiner Iconography of "Salsolaceous Plants" in der Bibliothek der Academy
von San Franciso vervollständigt habe, so wird es Ihnen leicht sein, die genaue species
von Atriplex zu ermitteln, welche sich dort so wirksam gezeigt hat auf dem alkalischen
Boden Jedenfalls sollten aber auch A. halimoides und A. vesicarium selbst auf
nicht
Salinen
Triften Ihres Landes eine
grosse Zukunft
haben.
Da die neunte Ausgabe der "Select Plants" wahrscheinlich schnellen Abgang haben wird,
schreibe ich fast täglich neue Erfahrungen nieder für die
zehnte
Ausgabe. Sie würden mich also recht verpflichten, wenn Sie mir bald einige notizen
über die Resultate der Verwerthung der manchen Salsolaceen geben, von denen ich Samen
sandte, auch werde ich unter
die betreffende Bemerkung hinzufügen sollten Verse[n]dung von Wurzeln über Oceane
hin einfach durch die Post sich es möglich erweisen.

As I am under the impression, highly esteemed Professor, that you do not yet have
the West African
wonder grass

) over there, which I have introduced into all Australian colonies and also into Polynesia,
I am making a trial consignment to you by
this
month's post, having packed roots fresh in some moss and enclosed them in a small
cigar box, the whole weighing less than 10 ounces (the postal limit for America).
This Panicum, the "Coapim" of the blacks, like many other strongly rooting plants ripens only
few seeds capable of germinating and then only in tropical zones. Here so far south
the propagation is only by roots and so will it also probably be with you.
Now the
question
is, will I be successful in transporting the rooted shoots to you simply through
the post? Will they remain alive during the month of travel? Do write to me
immediately
after arrival of the little box, even if only simply on a
post card,
whether the roots have withstood the journey. I think the evaporation in a mail bag
will be small. I must certainly not use much moisture, because that might (like wet
hay) cause spontaneous combustion.
I look forward with suspense to further information from you about the particular
success with certain Australian
on the Californian alkali soil. Since I have completed the copy of my Iconography of Salsolaceous Plants
in the library of the Academy of San Franciso, it will be easy for you to determine
the exact species of Atriplex that has proved itself so effective there on the alkali soil. However, at any rate
A. halimoides and A. vesicarium
even on
non-saline
pasture of your country should have a
great future
.
Since the ninth edition of the Select plants
will probably have a rapid sale, I am writing down almost daily new experiences for
the
tenth
edition.
You would therefore greatly oblige me if you give me some notes soon about the results
of the utilization of some
, of which I sent the seeds, also I will add the respective comments under
, should shipments of roots over oceans prove possible simply through the post.
