Ihre eben angelangter Brief, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, hat mir ganz besondere Freude bereitet, da es wieder ein Triumpf für die von mir eingeleiteten Salzbusch-Culturen ist.

Die neuer Errungenschaften durch Ihr Wirken in dieser Richtung interressiren mich im hohen Grade, da sie von weittragender Bedeutung sind. Nun möchte ich aber doch ermitteln, ob Sie Alle dort auch sicher sind über den richtigen Namen der Pflanze, welche Sie nennen? Kam der erste Same von mir u unter diesen Namen ? Könnten Sie mir einen Zweig mit reifen Früchten schicken. Im wilden Zustand wird nie so hoch, wie Sie ihn beschreiben. Indessen mag ja die besondere Beschaffenheit des Alkali Bodens dem Wuchs dieser Pflanze aussserordentlich günstig sein.

Sie nennen nur noch ausserden , u doch habe ich oft nach Berkeley auch Samen von u A. vesicarium gesandt, beide ausgezeichnetes Schaff-Futter liefernd. Hier ist für Weide Thiere ausgezeichnet. Vielleicht nimmt sie dort zu viel Alkalien auf und sollte denn auf brackischern Land gezogen werden.

Unser Freund Hr Dr Behr, dem ich meinen besten Neujahrswunsch durch Sie sende, hat in Süd-Australien Kenntniss erlangt von mehreren Atriplex Arten, namentlich auf A. semibaccatum; aber in 1846 u 1848-1849 (seinen dortigen Aufenthalt, war über den Futter Werth dieser Gewächse wenig oder nichts bekannt. Sie werden inzwischen die fehlenden Hefte der Iconography of Salsolaceus plants. So können Sie wohl selbst sehen ob Sie wirklich die richtige Namen haben. Auch die neunte erweiterte Ausgabe der Select Plants wird nun auch in Ihrer Universität und in Ihrer Akademie angekommen sein.

Es sind auch neu Notizen über Atriplex darin. Sollte ich zuerst die nun dort so wichtig geworden Atriplex Art dort empfehlen u die Früchte gesandt haben, so werden die Californier in Gerechtigkeit zu meiner Anstalt gewiss auch ein öffentliches Word des Dankes widmen.

highly esteemed Professor, has given me quite special pleasure, since it is again a triumph for the cultivation of saltbush initiated by me.

The new achievements through your work in this direction interest me to a great extent, since they are of wide-ranging significance. But of course now I would like to ascertain whether all of you there are also certain about the correct name of the plant that you call ? Did the first seed come from me and under this name ? Could you send me a twig with ripe seeds. In the wild condition is never so tall as you describe it. However, the special composition of the alkali soil may indeed be extraordinarily favourable for the growth of this plant.

You only name in addition and yet I have often sent seeds of and A. vesicarium to Berkeley too, both producing excellent sheep feed. Here is excellent for grazing animals. Perhaps there they absorb too much alkali and should then be raised on brackish land.

Our friend Dr Behr, to whom I send my best New Year wishes through you, had obtained knowledge in South Australia of several Atriplex species, especially on A. semibaccatum; but in 1846 and 1848-1849 (his residence there) little or nothing was known about the fodder value of this plant. You will meanwhile [get] the parts you lack of the Iconography of Salsolaceus plants.

B89.13.04, B90.13.14, B91.13.24. M to E. Hilgard, 7 March 1896, contained fruits of for comparison with the species grown in California under this name.

So you can probably see for yourself, whether you really have the right names. Also the ninth enlarged edition of the Select plants

B95.08.04.

will also have arrived now in your University and in your Academy.

There are even new notes about Atriplex in it. Should I have first recommended the Atriplex species that have now become so important there and have sent the fruits, the Californians will undoubtedly devote an official word of thanks too in justice to my institute .
