MS comprises 8 numbered pages commencing with p. 17; the earlier part of the letter is missing. The reference to the Pflanzen Familien in the final paragraph before the valediction indicates that the letter was addressed to Engler. Since M's comments were clearly inspired by his reading of Wettstein (1895), which according to its heading was published in Leipzig in October 1895 (although TL2, title entry 1701, dates it to December 1895), the letter has been dated to January 1896 as the earliest likely date by which M could have seen a copy in Melbourne.

Ich nehme diese Gelegenheit mehr, mein Bedauern auszudrücken, dass Hr Prof v. Wettstein die unglückliche Idee Baillons verwirklicht hat, das Genus zu unterdrücken und dadurch unsere Systematik mit einer Anzahl ganz nutzloser u sage schadender Namen zu beschweren. Wie bedauerlich dass das sonst so schöne Werk der Pflanzen-Familien in der Sucht nach Neuheit bei dieses u mancher andere Ordnung so entstellt ist. Ich hätte gedacht, dass Sie in solchen Fällen Ihre Censerschaft bei solchen Verirrungen ausüben würden. Ich wählte absichtlich vor fast 40 Jahren wie ich , u zusammenzog den letzteren Namen für die Vereinigung, weil dieser ausdrückt, dass es ein ächtes repräsentatives Muster-Genus sei. Es wäre kein so grosser Verstoss gewesen, wenn der Name angenommen wäre, da solcher doch auf mehrere Arten fasst, während nur auf die einzige Spec. von RBr anwendbar ist! Die Tendenz Baillon's ganz unnöthige [Ä]nderungen in der Namen der [...]

vorzunehmen, hat sich recht unangenehm auch für Benennungen hier anderweitig fühlbar gemacht. So hatte ich in den fünfzigen Jahren nach sorgfältigen Studium von etwa ½ hundert Arten diesen Namen für mehren vereinigte Gattungen gewählt, weil dadurch am Wenigsten neue Namen nöthig wurden. Aber ohne Special Studium stiess er dies um, u wählt (sage !) für die Vereinigung. Nun lässt sich aber durch den Antheren Bau noch als Genus aufrecht erhalten, also wäre jedenfalls nicht repräsentativ was nach Logik doch sein sollte.

Ich sehe voraus, dass wenn im Beginn des neuen Jahrhunderts Sie die Pflanzen Familien in Reihe und Glied werden erscheinen lassen, dass Sie solche entstellende Änderungen nach Rechtlichkeits Gefühl in Richtigkeit bringen werden.

has put into effect the unfortunate idea of Baillon to suppress the genus and thereby burden our systematics with a number of quite useless and indeed damaging names.

How unfortunate that the otherwise so magnificent work of the Pflanzen-Familien is so spoiled in this and many other orders in the search for originality. I would have thought that in such cases you would have exercised your censorship in such cases of errors. I chose intentionally almost 40 years ago when I gathered , and for combining with the latter, because this expressed that it was a truly representative model genus .

B59.03.01, p. 16.

It would not have been such a great infraction if were adopted, since it does embrace several species, whereas is applicable only to the single species of R Br!

Wettstein placed , Pseudopholidia, Santis, Duttonia, Pholidiopis, and Eremodendron in synonymy with .

has made itself very disagreeably noticeable even for nomenclature here in another way. Thus in the '50s after careful study of about ½ a hundred species I had chosen this name for several combined genera, because as a result the least number of new names was necessary.

The word omitted above is probably Eriostemon. In B59.04.04, pp. 102, M included the genera Phebalium, Microcybe, Asterolasia and Geleznowia in Eriostemon and in B62.03.03, pp. 119ff, he added and Chorilaena as sections. For the treatment about which M is complaining. see Baillon (1867-95), vol. 4, pp. 463-4.

But without special study he set this aside and chose (indeed !) for the combination. But now the anther structure of permits maintaining it still as genus, therefore would not in any case be representative, which indeed should be according to logic .

I foresee that when in the beginning of the new century you publish the Pflanzen-Familien in proper order you will bring such disfiguring changes into order according to a sense of justice .
