I write this long after midnight, dear Miss Lewellin, so is my time beset; but I want
to answer your kind letter
at once, to thank the Lady,
who so kindly offers the Gardeners Chronicle. I receive it however regularly by the
mail, and did so since about
40
years. More, — I was befriended since the middle of the Century with the founder
of the Gard. Chronicle Prof Lindley, who was illustrious before I was born, who conducted
the Chronicle for 30 years as Proprietor and Editor, wo
wrote me on his last sickbed a letter, which was finished by his son Sir Nathaniel
Lindley. The successor in the Editorship is since 30 years Dr Masters, a medical man
and like myself a corr. Member of the Inst. of France. With best greeting to all of
you
