The text given here is from 'Royal Geographical Society, Paper by the Governor', a report of the meeting of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, Queensland Branch, held on 25 October 1895, in Brisbane courier, 28 October 1895, p. 3. The meeting included a farewell to the retiring Governor, who presented a paper on Captain James Cook's first Pacific voyage, prompted by a remark in a Sydney newspaper that the memorial to Cook in Hawaii was 'an unworthy memorial to a not particularly deserving hero'.
M's telegram is dated to the day of the meeting as this was his frequent practice on similar occasions.
[Included in the correspondence read was a telegram from Baron von Mueller, offering his valedictory homage to his Excellency after having continued in Australia his long and brilliant career.]
