Lassen Sie meinen besten Dank ausgesprochen sein, geehrter Herr Geheimrath für Ihre gütige Felicitation zu meinem Eintritt in die 8tn Decade meines Lebens, und zu meiner Wahl in das Institut, über welche ich mich unendlich freue, obwohl ich diese hohe Ehre nur durch eine noch sehr kurze Lebenszeit geniessen können [werde].
Wie Sie hätte ich auch gern gewünscht, dass der mir seit mehr als 30 Jahren befreundete Baillon in diese Union der Auserwählten einen Sitz gehabt hätte, was in der Abtheilung gebornen Franzosen gewesen sein würde. Leider scheint er nicht im besten Vernehmen zu mehreren hervorragenden Phytologen seines Vaterlandes gestanden zu haben. Sein Dictionaire u seine Histoire des plantes hat er noch eben vollenden können. In Bezug auf das letztere Werk ist es zu bedauern, dass die Genera fast eine Wiederholung dessen sind, was B. & H ausgegeben.
Es ist recht erfreulich, dass jetzt zuletzt doch die Vegetation auch des tropischen Afrikes vollständig bekannt wird, eine Flora so nahe zu Süd-Europa. Sie werden fast alle specifischen Pflanzen der Erde wohl bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts besonders auch durch Ihre Mithülfe bekannt werden.

etwa um Ostern von hier senden, so dass solche nach dem Frost bei Ihnen ankommt. Das Gewicht würde etwa 1000 lb sein! Nur einmal schickte ich die Zwergart, die stammlos ist, nach Europa i.e. nach Kew, wo sie blühte u — wie Sie wissen abgebildet wurde. Da die Rhizome durchmessen sind unter einander, kann man einer grossen Ballen mit Erde haben, wodurch die Sendung in einer verschlossenen Kiste möglich sicher ist. Was würde der beste Hafen sein, Bremen?

M had celebrated his 70th birthday on 30 June 1895, and had been elected a Corresponding Member of the Académie des Sciences of the Institut de France on 1 July 1895.
about which I am pleased no end, although I will only be able to enjoy this high honour for a very short life span.
Like you, I would also rather have wished that my friend of more than 30 years, Baillon, had had a seat, which would have been in the section of French-born, in this union of chosen people. Unfortunately he seems not to have stood on the best terms with many eminent phytologists of his country. He has just been able to complete his Dictionare

In regard to the latter work, it is to be regretted that the genera are almost a repetition of that published by B. & H.

It is very gratifying that now finally the vegetation also of tropical Africa will become completely known, a flora so close to southern Europe. Probably at the end of the century almost all specific plants of the Earth will be known, particularly through your assistance.

I regret very much the death of Pasteur. He very kindly supported my election, which was a unanimous one.

M's election was not unanimous: of 37 votes cast at the ballot, he received 34, Julius von Sachs 1, and two were blank (Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l'Académie des Sciences, vol. 121, July-December 1895, p. 39).
