is from the British white poplar ( ), which occurs with some variability as regards the intenseness of its white vestiture and the degree of indentation of the leaves. The tree reaches from Britain to Sweden, Siberia, the Himalayan Mountains, and the countries at the Mediterranean Sea. I planted it near Melbourne in the 50th year of this century; it is an excellent tree for summer shade, easily grown, of attractive coloration, and easily propagated from cuttings.
