Durch diese Wochen-Post sende ich Ihnen, edler Freund, einige Diatomeae, welche ich von einem Specialisten hier erhalten habe Mr W. Bale, dessen locale Amateur-Forschungen ich unterstütze. So hat er als Darlehn von mir das grosse Werk des mir durch viele Jahre befreundeten Archdiaconus Schmidt, der jetzt 83 Jahr alt sein Amt niederlegt, aber geistig noch kräftig ist und so auch körperlich bis zu einem gewissen Grade.
Ich habe Mr Bale mit Herrn Prof Van Heurck in Correspondence gebracht, und könnte Ihnen auch manches aus den Diatomen Ihnen senden.
Seine Notizen über das jetzt Übersandte füge ich bei, aber das Gläschen N.12 zerbrach auf dem Wege zu mir, und der Inhalt wurde verschüttet.
Brauchen Sie und Ihre Wissenschafts Freunde dort eben jetzt etwas Besonderes von hier? Vielleicht könnte ich es herbei-schaffen.

By this week's mail I am sending you, noble friend, some diatoms, which I have received from a specialist here, Mr Bale, whose local amateur research I support. So he has as a loan from me the large work of Achdeacon Schmidt,

A. Schmidt (1874-1959). At the time M wrote this letter, 200 plates with letterpress had been published in fifty parts. The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne holds a set of Plates 1-176 (1874-92) bound as a single, large volume; this was probably what M lent Bale.
who has been a friend of mine for many years, who now at 83 years of age has resigned his office, but is still sound in mind and also in body to a certain extent.
I have brought Mr Bale into correspondence with Professor Van Heurck and could also send you much from the diatoms.
His notes about those just sent I enclose, but the small glass number 12 broke on the way to me and the contents were spilled.
Do you and your scientific friends there need anything in particular just now from here? Perhaps I could furnish it.
