Letter not found. For the text given here, see Memorials journal and botanical correspondence of Charles Cardale Babington (Cambridge, 1897), pp. xlv-xlvi. The extract is preceded by '(To R. Irwin Lynch,
Esq.)'. It is followed by an extract from M's letter to Mrs Anna Maria Babington (in
this edition as 95-08-17b), the two being printed jointly under the heading 'From Herr Baron Sir Ferdinand
v. Müller, F.R.S.'.
August 17th, 1895.
It is with deep sadness that I learn of the venerable Professor Charles C. Babington
passing away from us, the Nestor of the Linnean Society for many years, the true and
acute investigator of the British Flora, from whose work I have also profited for
my key to the system of Victorian plants, the genial friend to so many Phytologists,
including the writer of these lines. You will particularly feel his loss, as you so
long particularly cooperated with this distinguished veteran. … Perhaps he saw still
the aged
-fern, which I sent to your garden, and it may have been a source of novel joy to
him to have seen unfolding the numerous fronds of this ancient specimen.
