Mittwoch
Wednesday

17.8.95 is written in pencil above Wednesday. 17 August 1895 was a Saturday, but it is not known to what the annotation refers. perhaps a note of the date Best received the letter or was to see M. As it is evidently added after the letter was written, the letter is dated to the preceding Wednesday.
I am very sad and worried, dear Mr Best, and would like to again consult you. I would be so pleased if you will again make half an hour free for me soon. I am almost always in my house and would be so very pleased to see you.
Have you received many empty envelopes in St Kilda?

It is not known to what events or persons M is referring. Best was again asked to visit about something worrying M in March 1896: M to H. Best. 3 March 1896 (in this edition as 96-03-03b) and M to H. Best, 9 March 1896. The first is explicitly concerned with St Kilda, the second is likely to be because although M's envelope found with it was addressed '40 Chapel Street Balaclava', Sands Directory for 1896, pp. 603, 1323, gives Best's address as 40 Chapel Street St Kilda.
