Learning, dear Mr Carruthers, that you by superannuation are ceding from the Administration
of the phytologic branch of the Brit. Nat Hist. museum, I feel that I should offer
you my warmest thanks for the friendly consideration, shown me through out your whole
official course.
To this appreciation of your kindness I would wish to add a sincere hope, that divine
providence will grant you a long serene autumn of life, that thus you may witness
the further progress of the Institution, brought by you to such an eminence and high
renown, and that you may though with no official resources direct at your command,
still to the achievements, which will ever connect you with the science of plants.

William Carruthers was Keeper of Botany from 1871-95. See Gardeners' Chronicle, 1 June 1895, p. 688.
If there is anything, that from an antipodal distance I can do for giving you pleasure
or aiding your further objects, it shall be done with the utmost readiness.
With regardful and grateful remembrance your
Ferd von Mueller.
