On 2 May 1895 the Secretary for Agriculture, David Martin, wrote to Topp: 'In compliance with your request of
1st inst I have instructed Mr French Jr to report himself to the Government Botanist tomorrow, and Mr Minchin has also been
instructed that, as the work for which he was obtained has been completed, he should
report himself to the Govt Botanist'. Topp forwarded this letter to M 'for his information'
on 6 May and M replied the same day: 'I am grateful to the Undersecretary for arranging
the return of the two Herbarium Assistants, who — as reported already, reported themselves
back on Friday-morning, the 3th [sic] inst, and resumed their work here'.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller
Govt. Botanist.
The Under Secretary
