Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Answers to correspondents', Leader, 1 June 1895, p. 9 (B95.06.01). It is introduced by
Specimen of Grass .— S.S., Castlemaine, writes: —"Last July I planted a few roots of this and several other grasses as a trial in good forest soil, but deficient in phosphates; this has made far away the most vigorous growth. None of them were grazed by cattle, and this sample was quite fresh and green when taken up last week." Referring to the above, Baron von Mueller favors us with the following reply:—..
On the specimen of grass sent from Castlemaine are neither flowers nor grain, so that it is impossible to say which it is among the several thousand distinct species of grass now known. It would also be well, if your correspondent will send complete specimens in summer, to let us also know whether he obtained this new grass as an introduced one or as an indigenous species.
