Allow me to ask, dear Dr Bride, whether the trustees intend to exhibit a xylologic
collections at the Hobart-Exhibition,
which will open on the first November. I am getting some wood-articles of small size
ready and if the trustees not intend to send any woods or only large samples, perhaps
they would that a piece of each of the many sorts, collected by Mr Walter two years
ago, be cut off from the sample for me, so that I may have them done up into small
articles My means public and private are so severely taxed, that it is impossible
for me to send anyone out purposely to get the crude wood, nor could it be dry in
time. I believe, that the last large gathering of wood-specimens by Mr Walter is of
such dimensions of each piece, that without hurt to the technologic museum ¼ or ⅓
of each could be cut off. As I shall not exhibit as a private Individual, but only
in my public or departmental capacity, doubtless you could induce the Trustees to
grant me this favor.

On 10 September 1894, J. C. Newbery minuted: 'I can give the samples from the Museum
duplicates if it is sanctioned by the Trustees'; Bride then forwarded the request,
marked 'Urgent', to the vice-president of the Trustees, E. Langton, noting 'I think
this may be done without any loss or inconvenience'. The request was approved immediately
and notified in T. Bride to M, 12 September 1894 (in this edition as 94-09-12a). Arrangements for the selection of the timber specimens were made in M to T. Bride,
14 September 1894.
With regardful remembrance
your
Ferd von Mueller.
