Dear Baron von Mueller,
I was very deeply touched by your letter of the 20th instant
in which you felicitate me upon my election to the position of President of our society.
I am deeply sensible of the honour conferred upon me, and should, indeed, have felt
greatly disappointed had I not received a word of encouragement from one so highly
distinguished and universally respected throughout the whole scientific world as the
learned President of the Victorian Branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australia. I appreciate the felicitation of my exalted Victorian colleague most highly and I shall do every thing in my power to further the interests of your
branch of the society as well as of my own. Upon this subject I shall take the liberty
of addressing you later on.
