At a meeting of the Council on 30 June 1894, the Mayor, W. Earle, reported 'that the planting of the Marram grass had this year been carried out in a most satisfactory manner and he now thought it would be a fitting time to invite Baron Von Mueller to visit Port Fairy and see for himself the immense amount of good accruing from the introduction of Marrum grass. They were greatly indebted to the Baron and he accordingly moved "That an invitation be sent to Baron von Mueller K.C.M.G. to visit Port Fairy and see for himself the wonderful growth of the grass" — | Seconded by Cr Tennyson Carried unanimously' (minute book 11, p. 8, Port Fairy Borough Council records).
He could not, however, visit the town during the winter months, as he was not in very good health, but he would come down in the summer, when the weather would be more suitable for him to move about.]
