MS found with a specimen of Eucalyptus deglupta (MEL 2434941) that is accompanied by M's label identifying it as E. Naudiniana.

Hochgeehrter Herr Baron,
Vielleicht entsinnen Sie Sich noch, dass ich mir erlaubte habe Anfang
April d. J. mich wegen das Eucalyptus E. Fowleri an Sie zu wenden. Ihr freundliches Antwortschreiben vom 6 April habe ich darauf an den Landeshauptmann Herrn Schmiele in Friedrich-Wilhemshafen ubersendet. Diese hat mir nunmehr einige Blätter, Blüthen und Rinde des auf der Gazelle Halb-Insel (Nue Pommern) wachsenden Eucalyptus übersendet, über dessen botanischen Namen Zweifel bestehen. Ich werde nicht verfehlen Ihnen diese Proben alsogleich zu übersenden.
Früchte und Holzproben sind leider in Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen nicht zur Hand gewesen.
Der Herr Landeshauptm schreibt, dass von dem ihm so überaus gütig geschenkten Samen von
Eucalyptus alba

leider nur ein kleiner Theil aufgegangen ist. Die Baumpflanzen schiessen dabei nicht hoch auf, sondern wachsen meist knorrig oder buschartig und ausserst langsam. Zudem leiden dieselben sehr erheblich unter einem braunflügeligen Käfer mit schwarzem Kopfe, welcher die jungen Blätter zerstört. Herr Schmiele bittet daher um Ihren so sehr werthvollen Rath, ob vielleicht eine andere Art empfohlen werden könnte.
Sie würden mich aufs neue zu innigem Danke verpflichten, wenn Sie die grosse Gewogenheit haben wollten, mich über die botanische Bestimmung des Eucalyptus von der Gazelle Halbinsel und über die Quelle unterrichten wollten aus der ich guten Eucalyptus Samen für Kaiser Wilhelms Land käuflich beziehen könnte.
Ich muss wirklich sehr um Ihre Nachsicht bitten, dass ich so oft und vielfach an ihren ganz unschätzbaren Rath appellire.

Mit vieler Freude habe ich über die schöne Fest gehört, das Sie und die andern Herrn für Herrn Konsul Brahe gefeiert haben. Ihre schöne Rede war in der hiesigen Deutschen Zeitung abgedruckt und ich habe mich daran sehr erfreut.
Von Herrn Pastor Herlitz habe ich noch mündliche Schilderungen über den Verlauf der Jubeltages erhalten.

so very kindly sent to him only a small part has germinated. The young trees are not shooting up high, but grow mostly gnarled or bushy and extremely slowly. In addition they suffer considerably from a brown-winged beetle with black head that destroys the young leaves. Mr Schmiele therefore asks for your so very valuable advice, whether perhaps another species could be recommended.
I would be greatly indebted to you once again, if you would have the great kindness to inform me about the botanical identification of the Eucalyptus from the Gazelle Peninsula and the source from which I could purchase good Eucalpytus seeds for Kaiser Wilhelms Land.
