Beigefügt erhalten Sie, hochgehrter Hr Dr Nordstedt, einen Wechsel von £2.- .-, welcher
Sie an irgend einer Börse oder Bank Schwedens verwerthen können. Ich halte es für
eine Ehrensache nach aller Ihrer Mühe für die Characeen Publication Sie schadlos zu
halten. Freilich hat es mich überrascht, dass der Verkauf in Europa u anderswo so
gering war. Hat die Verlagshandlung vielleicht den Preis zu hoch gestellt, nachdem
schon die ganzen Druck kosten bezahlt waren? Oder hat die Verlagshandlung das Werk
nicht genug bekannt gemacht?
Auch ich bedauere das grosse Format, wenn nur eine Art auf jede Platte kam, denn bei
diesen niederen Gewächsen ist ja keine Gross-Quart Platte erforderlich wie bei den
Phanergamen, von welchem ich 800 Platten lieferte, denn ich gebrauchte den Raum um
stets
die Zergliederungen von der Blumen Knospe bis zum Embryo zu geben.
Geldmangel ist ja auch fühlbar in Europa. So ist also eine Fortsetzung dieser schönen
Characeen Arbeit nicht zu denken. Es wird dennoch am Besten sein, wenn ich auch künftig
an Sie das neu erlangte Characeen Material sende. Es ist ja nicht nöthig, dass an
unvollständige Material Ihre werthvolle Zeit vergeudet wird. Ich lasse auch oft unvollstendige
Ex. von Vascular Pflanzen aus Zeit Ökonomie unberücksichtigt.

Enclosed you will receive, highly esteemed Dr Nordstedt, a draft of £2, which you
can cash at any exchange or the Bank of Sweden. I regard it as a matter of honour
to compensate you for all your trouble for the
publication.
Admittedly it has surprised me that the sale in Europe and elsewhere was so small.
Has the publishing house perhaps set the price too high after the whole of the printing
costs were already paid? Or has the publishing house not advertised the work enough?
I also regret the large format, when only one species came on each plate, because
with these tiny plants a large quarto plate is not necessary as with the phanerogams,
of which I have produced 800 plates, because I needed the space so as to
always
give the dissections from the flower bud to the embryo.
Lack of money is also perceptible in Europe. Thus a continuation of this beautiful
work is not to be thought of. However, it will be best if in future I also send the
newly arrived
material to you. It is not necessary that your valuable time be squandered on incomplete
material. I also often leave incomplete specimens of vascular plants unnoticed from
economy of time.
