Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Nuytsia', 'Home correspondence', Gardeners' chronicle, 14 April 1894, p. 473 (B94.04.03). The letter is dated to early March, as the latest likely date that it could have been sent to have been published in this issue.
M had earlier suggested raising the species from seed; see M to J. Hooker, 27 February 1870 (in this edition as 70-02-27a).
It seems not unlikely that the wonderfully interesting and remarkably beautiful could be brought into cultivation from suckers, which, when packed in their natural soil, would probably endure the voyage to Europe well enough. It would be advisable that the shipments should be made direct from King George's Sound,

as that would be the shortest way of sending, and Mr. W. Webb could be relied on for the proper packing of the young plants, just as has been the case with growing plants of , even in close cases as ordinary freight goods; such consignments ought, however, to arrive in the early summer. Whoever sees a grand tree of Nuytsia in its natural home, flowering alongside arborescent s, must be struck with observing the close structural affinities of these plants.
