Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Forestry', an article by A. Kinney in Pacific rural press, 31 March 1894, p. 246 (B94.03.09). The letter is dated to February 1894 as the latest likely date it could have been sent in order to reach California in time to be quoted in this issue of the paper. It is introduced by ‘In reply to a recent question of mine, Baron F. Von Mueller writes as follows’.
The two largest and best eucalyptus are E. rostrata and E. microtheca. Seeds of these, correct to name, you could in Melbourne obtain from Messrs. Law, Somner & Co., and in Paris from Messrs. Vilmorin, Andrieux & Co.

In the Pacific rural press, 14 April 1894, p. 288, a letter to the Editor by Kinney was printed saying: ‘The word “desert” was left out in a quotation printed in the Rural from Baron Von Mueller’s last letter to me. The quotation should read: “The two largest and best desert eucalypts are E. rostrata and E. microtheca.”’
