When coming to this weeks mail-work, dear Mr Macdonald, I find that I have as yet
not returned to you Major Darwin's letter.
Will you kindly reply as Hon. Secr. of our branch officially, acknowledging the honor
done us, assuring the home Soc. of our desire of aiding the Congress, but pointing
out, that advanced age and with my local professional responsibilities I should find
it impossible to attend personally at this great international gathering of geographers.

Leonard Darwin, at this date an assistant secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. Letter not found.
M had been invited to be an Honorary Vice-President of the sixth International Geographical Congress to be held in London in August 1895. The invitation was alluded to in M to A. Macdonald, 17 January 1894; see notes thereto and Keltie & Mill (1896), p. 5.
Always your
Ferd von Mueller
We must make at the next Council-Meeting special arrangements, how to aid this congress
by timely efforts.
