MS black-edged; M's nephew, George Ferdinand Doughty, had died on 19 November 1893.
Private
13/1/94.
This day, dear Sir James, I received much to my surprise and with much sadness the enclosed letter from Mrs Brian Hooker.

S. Hooker to M, 5 January 1894.
I lost entirely sight of him even in correspondence for several years, and had no idea of his distress. I wrote to Mrs Hooker, that I would communicate with you, and advised her also to let her husband communicate with Prof Ulrich of Dunedin . I told her further, that if her consort did not get on, I would send some little temporary help, but that this could not be much as I have no contingencies vote whatever since 1892, so that these to the extent of several hundred £ have to come out of my Salary. Private property I have none, as all I had was sunk in my researches and service through life. I pointed out also to her that Mr Hooker through his illustrious father had the highest claims for consideration on N.Z.
Regardfully always your Ferd von Mueller
I never met Mrs Brian Hooker to my knowledge.
