Date stamped Royal Gardens Kew 5. Feb. 94; annotated in pencil: D.O. and in black ink
by Joseph Hooker: 5/2/94.
Only some few lines, dear Dr Dyer, to convey to you and Sir Joseph my best felicitation for the new year.
Then let me thank you for the concession by yourself and Prof Oliver in accepting
the drawing of the
very rare
Darwinia for the Icones at which my Countryman
is delighted, looking upon himself now as quite a celebrity.

The plate did not appear until May 1894, in Oliver (1891-5), vol. 24, part 1. In his
commentary Oliver wrote: ‘we find the [ovules] 6 to 8 in number, as they are also
represented by Herr Eckert, in an elaborate drawing of the plant communicated by Sir
F. v. Mueller’.
How strange, - I never learnt of the bestowal, so worthily, of the Linnean Medal on
Prof Oliver,
til last week, and then only from Möller’s Garten Zeitung of Erfurt.
