I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of this day,
informing me that his Excellency the Governor in Council had been pleased, to continue
my services til the end of June 1894;
and I beg of you, to convey to the honorable the Chief Secretary my best thanks for
this mark of continued confidence, which I will endeavour to deserve also in future.
Let me add the expression of my gratitude to yourself for the friendly action, taken
by yourself in my interest.

On 28 December 1893 the Secretary, Premier's Department, E. Thomas, wrote to the Under
Secretary, T. Wilson, saying that the Governor-in-Council had approved the continued
employment of M, the Government Astronomer, R. Ellery, and the Government Statist,
H. Hayter, until the end of June 1894. Under the Public Service Act, officers past the retirement age, at this stage
65 years, could only be continued in service for six further months, and only if the
Public Service Board approved an application from the Government.
